If we consider a family to be a unit, then without any doubt the head of every family unit is the parent. While most jobs in the world require extensive educational experience or physical strength, parenting is not only a full time job, but it requires complete submission of ones priorities and exertion of all of ones effort.
Parenting skills are not merely controlling and bringing up your children. It is enhancing the bonds of a family relationship. Parenting not only involves a duty that one inherits through the birth of their child. It is a state of complete submission and unconditional love towards ones child.
A parent restricts, absconds and denies which ultimately lead to the initiation of repulsion which is most commonly encountered in teenagers due to soaring hormones. Parenting skills don’t come naturally. We do as we see best either following somebody we look up to or what we have learnt with our experience. Although it is advisable to seek a colleague or a friends opinion to deal with a certain parenting problem, one must always resort to their conscience and own judgment to make a final decision.
The thought of parenting is one that is a very practical and intimidating one. As we grow older, we learn with the many mistakes that we make. However we must make sure through our commitment, our dedication and mot importantly our patience we can try and be better parents for our children, than our parents were for us.
It is always healthy to involve the entire household and not just your spouse. Sit with your children and ‘listen’, not talk! Ask them what they seek from you as parents that you might have kept in your hindsight. Maybe even ask them for parenting tips. Nothing is more important than maintaining the bonds of a family relationship. Parenting to the best of your ability is the first step towards it.
